Butterfly soup.

Wow-eee! What a busy week in the butterfly class! The butterflies have all worked super hard, we really hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

Lets have a look what's been going on in our classroom this week.

The Red admirals have started their ICT lessons. We are lucky to have nearly enough computers for one each, but the children soon wanted to share their work with each other. Mrs Harris is a real whizz at ICT and has been teaching the children how to use all the exciting programs we have available at school.

We have also started our gross-motor movement classes where we learn big movements which help improve the little movements we make when we write.My favourite part was rolling the tyres down the hill! Everyone waited their turn and worked together. It was so much fun!

We practice making anti clockwise circles in water, chalks, by rolling, by playing circle games, and drawing lots of big circles. Going over the anti clockwise movement helps us remember which way round to write our circular letters. After we've had lots of practice, we put it into action by writing our names. 

Success! One Holly blue wrote his name for the very first time! The whole of the holly blue class were so proud that they burst into applause. 

We have been starting to learn about Harvest. We talked about the farmer bringing food in from the fields, and then went looking for our own!

While digging in the garden with Mrs Chandarana, the children found a whole stash of delicious smelling white onions.

 

What a lot of weeds! Good thing we had lots of strong children around to help us carry them away and make the garden super tidy.

 Once we'd found all of the vegetables hiding in the mud it was time to learn the name of everything we had, and write our soup recipe! The children all helped to spell out the names of the vegetables. They must have been working hard at home learning their sounds!

Then it was time o get peeling and chopping! Everyone had a go at using a peeler to get the vegetables ready for our soup... some more enthusiastically than others!

Soup is good, but it's much better with bread! We started this adventure by hearing the story of the little red hen. Click here for a version of the story to read together.

We all had a go rubbing the butter into the flour. It's always a good idea to get your hands messy!

The Red Admirals even ground up some of the wheat they had found in the garden using a pestle and mortar. Mrs Harris re-told the story of the little red hen, asking some of the children to play the parts.

Time to mould the dough into shapes! The Holly Blues got a bit fancy, and made some hedgehogs!

 We waited for the dough to rise, and then baked it in our oven. It smelt delicious!

 Then came the best part... the tasting! We all had some of the soup and bread that we had worked very hard making. Everyone had something to say about the soup and bread. It was such a nice experience. 

 After the best part comes the worst part, washing up! The children  got stuck in and helped us wash. They told me "we got a biscuit for washing up, but we're not supposed to tell you!".

We were so busy this week that we've still got lots of lovely harvest things to do next week. The harvest meal is going to be on Thursday the 11th so we are going to continue looking at harvest and healthy/unhealthy foods. We would appreciate it if you could bring in any magazine pictures of foods that you find. We're also after more junk modelling resources and would especially like clear plastic bottles.

We are also going to start looking at autumn. We are going on an autumn walk on Wednesday, and need parent helpers to come along with us. If you think you could spare some time we would greatly appreciate it, and so would your little butterfly!
